Seoul. At least 60 houses were completely destroyed in a fire that broke out on Friday morning in a village near South Korea’s capital and some 500 locals were evacuated. Officials said firefighters are trying to control the blaze in Seoul’s Guryeong Village. There was no immediate news of any casualty. Shin Yong-ho, a fire department official in Seoul’s Gangnam district, said rescuers were still searching the areas affected by the blaze, though all were believed to have been evacuated. The fire started at around 6:30 in the morning.
Over 800 fire brigade personnel, police officers and other staff were deployed to bring the fire under control and evacuate people to safety. Pictures from the scene showed firefighters trying to douse the flames in a village covered in thick white smoke and helicopters spraying water from above. Shin Yong-ho said that it is estimated that a house made of ‘plastic sheet’ and wood (plywood) caught fire, which later spread to the rest of the houses in the village.
He said that the exact cause of the fire is being ascertained. Kim Ah-reum, an official at the Gangnam district office, said about 500 people were housed in a nearby gym and a school. The authorities plan to put them up in hotels later. Kim Un-hee, a spokesman for South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, said the president has asked authorities to use all available resources to minimize the loss of life and property from the incident.
