11 percent decline
Sunak’s ratings were -2.7 in June while his approval rating came in at +21.9 in May. Compared to the previous month, it has registered a decline of 11.7 percent. When he became the PM in October 2022, the rating was +49.9. Sunak who is the richest PM of the country is the son-in-law of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy. Sunak’s rating downgrade comes at a time when the government is upset with the Bank of England’s decision to hike interest rates by five percent. Also, the government’s policy of deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda was declared illegal by a court last week.
Braverman has become favorite
Along with him, the rating of nine ministers of his cabinet has also come negative. This is also a record in itself. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, Secretary Michael Gove and Oliver Dowden, who is the Deputy PM, have also seen a decline in their ratings. The country’s home minister Suella Braverman, who is also very controversial, has a very positive rating of 30.4 and is the best. What may be some consolation for Sunak, however, is that both former PM Boris Johnson and Theresa May have lost their popularity. While Johnson’s rating is -33.8, May’s is -51.2. According to the ConservativeHome site, party members are isolated.
Labor Party gains
Another bad news for Sunak is that the Labor Party has an 18-point lead over the Conservative Party. By-elections are to be held on three parliamentary seats and in such a situation this rating will have a significant impact. It is believed that the Conservative Party may have to face a big loss in the next elections at the hands of the Labor Party.
