External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who arrived in Zanzibar on Wednesday on a two-day visit to Tanzania, along with President Dr. Hussain Ali Miwinyi attended a reception onboard Indian Navy Ship Trishul. Jaishankar said the presence of INS Trishul here shows India’s commitment to the “SAGAR initiative”. Indian Naval Ship ‘Trishul’ is currently in Tanzania. Jaishankar tweeted on Thursday, “Participated in the reception on INS Trishul with the President of Zanzibar, Dr. Hussain Ali Miwini. Welcomed the Speaker, Ministers, Members of Parliament and senior officers of the Tanzanian Armed Forces and members of the Indian community.
He said, “The presence of INS Trishul in Zanzibar is a reflection of India’s commitment to the “SAGAR initiative”. Jaishankar also participated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Education of India, IIT Madras and the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training of Tanzania to set up a campus of IIT Madras in Zanzibar-Tanzania. The External Affairs Minister tweeted, “Witnessed the signing of the agreement to set up the Zanzibar campus of IIT Madras. Gratitude for the presence of President Dr. Hussain Ali Mivinyi, other ministers on this occasion.
The External Affairs Minister said that this historic step reflects India’s commitment to the Global South. The Ministry of External Affairs said that the campus reflects the long-standing friendship between India and Tanzania and reflects India’s vision to enhance connectivity with the people of Africa and the Global South. Jaishankar is scheduled to visit Zanzibar on July 5-6. During this, he will visit the water supply project funded by India’s Line of Credit and meet the top leadership here. After meeting the President of Zanzibar, the External Affairs Minister tweeted, “Delighted to meet President Dr. Hussein Ali Miwinyi. His commitment to building a strong partnership between India and Zanzibar is commendable.
Our development alliances and defense cooperation are areas that President Ali Miwinyi is very closely associated with.” The External Affairs Minister will be visiting the Tanzanian city of Dar-es-Salaam from July 7-8 after attending a reception onboard Indian Naval Ship Trishul. He is scheduled to visit where he will co-chair the India-Tanzania Joint Commission meeting with his counterpart. He is also scheduled to meet the top leadership of the country including several ministers. During his visit, Jaishankar will meet members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group for India and inaugurate the India-Tanzania Business Meet. He will also unveil the bust of Swami Vivekananda in Dar-e-Salaam.
