Madrid: Due to the forest fire in Spain, about 500 people have been evacuated from their homes to safer places. Official sources said that the forest spread over 8,500 hectares of land has so far been burnt by the fire in the southwestern Spanish region of Extremadura. Spain’s Ministry of Ecological Transition has confirmed that 250 regional firefighters and 165 members of the Spanish Army’s emergency response unit, along with 10 earth-movers, six aircraft, eight helicopters and 23 vehicles, are trying to bring the fire under control.
According to sources, the fire broke out on Wednesday night in the ‘Las Hurdas’ area of Extremadura. Earlier in July 2022, a forest fire had destroyed the forest spread over an area of 5,000 hectares. The fire has grown out of control due to strong winds and dry conditions. Some areas of the villages of Cadalo, Descargamaría, Robledillo de Gata and Torrecilla de los Angeles and Ovejuela were evacuated as a precaution and three main roads were closed.
According to data from the European Forest Fire Information System (IFFIS), about 66,000 hectares of land are expected to be affected by wildfires in Spain in 2023. At the same time, in 2022, about 310,000 hectares of forest was destroyed. It is noteworthy that the Spanish government recently approved a 2.2 billion euro (US$2.38 billion) package to help deal with the ongoing drought.
