Former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff was on Friday elected ‘unopposed’ as the new head of the New Development Bank (NDB). DNB is a multilateral financial institution established by BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), also known as BRICS Bank. Rousseff (75) will replace Marcos Troyjo as NDB chief. The headquarter of this bank is in Shanghai. A press release issued by the NDB said, “The Board of Governors of the BRICS countries of the NDB has unanimously elected Rousseff as the President of the Bank with immediate effect.”
Rousseff is considered a close ally of Brazil’s current president, Lula da Silva, who defeated Jair Bolsonaro in last October’s presidential election. Rousseff’s appointment was announced ahead of Lula’s visit to China on 26 March at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping. Renowned economist Rousseff was elected President of Brazil for two consecutive terms. However, he was removed from office in 2016 following allegations of budget manipulation. Rousseff denied all the allegations against her.
