A South Korean court on Friday sentenced the country’s former Law Minister Cho Kuk to two years in prison, pleading guilty to forging documents to get his children admitted to prestigious schools. The previous government of South Korea came under criticism after the scandal came to light and there were massive protests against it across the country. Cho was also found guilty of abusing his power while serving as a senior aide to former President Moon Jae-in.
He dropped an investigation into a former Financial Services Commission official believed to be close to Moon, who had been arrested for accepting bribes from businessmen. However, the Seoul Central District Court decided not to immediately arrest Cho, saying he was not a flight risk and that his wife was already serving a prison sentence in connection with their children’s admission. Cho told reporters after the sentence was announced that he was preparing to challenge the verdict. If Cho does so within the next seven days, he will avoid jail time pending a decision by the Court of Appeal.
