The expansion of bilateral defense ties is expected to be a major focus of Prime Minister Modi’s talks with Macron. Macro has chosen Modi as the guest of honor for the July 14 military parade. Apart from the presence of Indian soldiers in this parade, the participation of specially designed Rafale jets for the Indian Air Force is enough to tell the close defense relations between the two countries.
26 Rafale deal for Navy
Ahead of the start of PM Modi’s visit to France, the Defense Acquisition Council has given preliminary approval for the purchase of 26 Rafale-maritime fighter jets and three Scorpion diesel-electric submarines for the Indian Navy. The proposals were discussed during high-level meetings in the Defense Ministry, following which they were placed before a council headed by Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. It is believed that its deal can be signed during PM Modi’s visit. Earlier, when India bought 36 Rafale jets from France, they were for the Indian Air Force.
Through this deal, the Indian Navy is likely to get 22 single seater Rafale Marine aircraft as well as four trainer jets. According to defense experts, there is an urgent need for aircraft and submarines as the Indian Navy is facing their shortage and needs to meet its requirements especially keeping in mind the security challenges in the Indian Ocean region.

Aircraft carriers INS Vikramaditya and Vikrant are operating MiG-29s and Rafale is required on both carriers. According to defense sources, the value of these deals is estimated to be more than Rs 90,000 crore, but the final cost will be clear only after the contract negotiations are over. India is one of the biggest buyers of French arms. In 2015, PM Modi had announced a historic deal for 36 Rafale fighter jets during his visit to France. Its value was said to be about one billion euros or $ 4.24 billion.
