France’s interior minister on Thursday ordered local authorities to ban all pro-Palestinian demonstrations as anti-Semitic incidents escalated after Palestinian militant organization Hamas attacked Israel.
President Emmanuel Macron has urged the French people not to let the ongoing war in West Asia affect their country. Just before Macron addressed the nation on the conflict in Middle East, Paris police fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse pro-Palestine protesters. These people had protested against the Israeli government in violation of the ban.
In his address, Macron said, “We should not bring ideological risks here (France). Let us not add national differences to international differences. We must remain united…” Hamas is believed to have taken several French-Israeli citizens hostage.
Macron said France would protect its Jewish citizens. He also expressed concern about the increasing feeling of hostility towards the people of the Muslim community living in France.
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin on Thursday instructed local authorities to further strengthen security around Jewish schools, synagogues and other places. The directive states that demonstrations in support of Palestine should be banned and those who violate the restrictions should be arrested.
