Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron has announced his decision to recall the country’s ambassador and end all military cooperation following a coup in the West African nation of Niger. In a statement, the President said, ‘France has decided to recall its ambassador. Our ambassador and many diplomats will return to France. According to the report, he said military cooperation had “ended” and French troops would withdraw in the “coming months.”
The military junta seized power in Niger in July. The military has recently seized control of several former French colonies in West Africa — Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali and Chad. There was a coup in Gabon last month. There are currently about 1,500 French soldiers in Niger.
In his statement, Macron said he still regarded ousted Niger President Mohamed Bazoum, who is held captive by the military, as the country’s “only legitimate ruler.” Meanwhile, the military junta in Niger welcomed Macron’s decision, saying it was ‘a new step towards Niger’s sovereignty’.
