Former Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday moved the Lahore High Court seeking a stay on the government’s action against PTI and quashing of several cases filed against him on similar charges. A two-member bench headed by Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh is hearing the PTI chief’s petition. The petition, filed by PTI, has named nine officials and individuals as respondents, including the Prime Minister, the Home Minister, the caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab, the Inspector General of Police of Punjab, the National Accountability Bureau and the Federal Investigation Agency.
At the outset of the hearing, Imran’s counsel Barrister Salman Safdar said that new cases are being filed against his client with each passing day. He said that the state machinery was being misused. Expressing concern over Imran’s arrest, the lawyer said that more than 140 cases have been registered against the former prime minister. They demanded that the high officials of the police should appear in the court and explain whether the arrest was necessary or not.
The lawyer said that all the cases against Imran were filed by the police, who he claimed were using police stations for political gains. The lawyer told the court that according to the law, it is necessary to tell the reasons for the arrest. Citing reports, he claimed that at the end of Ramzan, a fire broke out at Imran’s residence in Lahore. [पुलिस] Operation can be started.
