Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Friday that he plans to submit a proposal to the G-7 group of seven countries for new sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. Today marks one year of Russia-Ukraine war. Kishida will host the G-7 summit to be held online. Kishida told a news conference that he would call on other countries to stop providing military aid to Russia.
“To absolutely not allow any unilateral change of the status quo, we must firmly pursue sanctions against Russia and support Ukraine to restore peace and international order based on the rule of law,” he said. He said they planned to discuss the latest developments regarding the Russian war on Ukraine. He said, “I plan to propose new sanctions against Russia.”
Kishida is the only G-7 leader who has not visited Ukraine. Pressure is mounting on Kishida to visit Ukraine ahead of hosting the G-7 summit in Hiroshima. Asked about a possible trip to Ukraine, Kishida said he was “considering” a trip to Ukraine. He said he is looking into ways to ensure security and privacy, but nothing has been officially decided. The G-7 group of countries includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.
