Gail conducts ship-to-ship transfer of LNG for the first time in the world

New Delhi. GAIL, the country’s largest gas company, has launched ship-to-ship transfer of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to reduce shipping costs and carbon emissions. The public sector company is taking unique steps to boost business and this is a part of the same. Company officials gave this information. GAIL has signed a contract with America for the order of 58 lakh tonnes per annum of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas).
The company brings this quantity to India through LNG ships. The ship typically travels a distance of approximately 19,554 nautical miles round trip to transport LNG from the Sabine Pass in the US to India via the Suez Canal and Gibraltar. The journey takes approximately 54 days and emits approximately 15,600 tonnes of carbon. Emissions are usually controlled by using the latest technology or by changing the destination of the cargo.
GAIL has taken a unique step to reduce carbon emissions. Under this arrangement, the sea route favorable to both sides is adopted. Officials said the company’s recently leased ship, Castillo de Santisteban, “loaded” a shipment of LNG from the United States. But midway, it transferred the cargo to another chartered ship of Qatar Gas, Al Gharrafah. Mid-sea transfer of LNG from one ship to another has been done for the first time in the world.
“This is the first transfer of LNG in the world between a large conventional LNG ship and a Q-Flex LNG ship,” an official said. The Qatargas ship proceeded to Dahej in Gujarat to offload the cargo. It was originally planned to be landed through GAIL’s ship. Its ship returned to the next port of loading from Gibraltar. This has resulted in a distance reduction of about 8,736 nautical miles, officials said. This is equivalent to 7,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. Moreover, it also resulted in reduction of ship journey for GAIL’s chartered vessels from 54 days to about 27 days. “GAIL has gained more than $1 million from this move,” an official said.
