Gandhi Walk organized in Johannesburg after three years, thousands of people participated


Mahatma Gandhi’s lookalike Harivardan Pitamber once again participated in the Gandhi Walk organized on Sunday. He was the main attraction of this padyatra. A large number of participants were seen taking selfies with him.

The 35th edition of the annual Gandhi Walk was organized in Lenasia suburb of Johannesburg city of South Africa on Sunday. More than two thousand people took part in this six kilometer long march.

In view of the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, about a month before the proposed Gandhi Walk in the year 2020, the Gandhi Walk Committee had decided to postpone this walk indefinitely.

According to reports, there were plans to organize two formats of Gandhi Walk in 2020, including a 15 kilometer long walk for runners, while a five kilometer long walk for common people and senior citizens.

According to reports, a huge amount of money was spent on preparations related to the proposed Gandhi Walk in 2020 and around four thousand people had registered to participate in it.

The country’s President Cyril Ramaphosa had announced the imposition of a complete lockdown a fortnight before the scheduled date for these marches. Ramaphosa last attended the annual event as chief guest and praised the Gandhi Walk Committee for promoting social unity and harmony.

Pitambara participated in the padyatra wearing white dhoti and spectacles and holding a stick in his hand. Pointing towards him, Ramaphosa said, thank you for inviting me, for making me a part of this great and wonderful Gandhi Walk and especially for giving me the opportunity to stand with the man standing right next to me (a lookalike of Mahatma Gandhi).
