Pakistan’s former prime minister was on Sunday shifted to a jail in Punjab province after being found guilty in a corruption case. Imran, 70, was arrested on Saturday from his Zaman Park home in Lahore, soon after he was convicted by the Islamabad Trial Court in the Toshakhana corruption case. It has been alleged in the case that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief deliberately concealed the details of the gifts kept by him from Toshakhana. Now-a-days Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is alleging that Imran is being ill-treated in jail. Let’s take a closer look at Attock Jail, its history and what Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is alleging.

Attock Jail and its Fort

The city of Attock is located on the banks of the Indus River, with Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province on the opposite bank of the historic river. It is also the last major city in the Punjab province along the Grand Trunk Road. According to Daily O, the town was earlier named Campbellpur after Field Marshal Colin Campbell, the Commander-in-Chief of the British Army during the 19th century. Alexander the Great and Ibn-e-Batuta are some of the historical figures who stayed in the city of Attock during their travels. According to GeoTV, the jail was built over 67 acres, six kanals and 12 marlas. The jail building measures 17 acres on the Punjab Jail Department’s website. The jail colony itself is spread over 26 acres, two kanals and 12 marlas, while its agricultural land is spread over 22 acres and four kanals. There is another two acres of barren land. This prison is one of the 40 prisons currently operating in the Punjab province. Although it is designed to hold 539 prisoners, it is currently overcrowded – it houses at least 804 prisoners.

Nawaz Sharif has also been kept

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was initially held in Attock jail after his arrest following the toppling of his government by former President Pervez Musharraf. According to Daily O, Major Nadir Parvez was also in the Attock jail. Parvez was an army officer who was accused of overthrowing the government of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. He later served in the Nawaz regime. Asif Ali Zardari and Shehbaz Sharif were also detained in Attock on corruption charges. However, while Imran is lodged in the Attock Jail, the other leaders were sent to the nearby Attock Fort. According to Geo TV, the Attock Fort is built in the middle of a forest.
