Global coal industry likely to lay off more than four lakh miners by 2035: Report

More than four lakh mining-related jobs in the coal industry are expected to be lost by 2035. This means that about 100 workers may lose their jobs every day. China and India are expected to be most affected by this.
This came to light in a report. According to the report compiled by ‘Global Energy Monitor’, the main reasons for this will be the market shift towards cheaper wind and energy generation and the lack of planning to manage the transition to a post-coal economy.
Global Energy Monitor, a US-based NGO, analyzes the emerging international energy landscape. The closure of coal facilities is expected to result in the loss of 990,200 coal-mining jobs at operational mines, potentially resulting in the layoff of more than a third (37 percent) of the current workforce, according to the report.
China and India are expected to be most affected by this. China’s Shanxi province will see the largest number of job losses globally. 2,41,900 jobs may be lost there by 2050. At the same time, 73,800 jobs may be lost in Coal India by the middle of the century.
