The Ministry of Heavy Industries has approved Rs 800 crore for three public sector petroleum marketing companies to set up 7,432 fast charging stations for electric vehicles across the country. This amount has been given under the second phase of the scheme to accelerate the manufacturing and adoption of electric vehicles in the country (FAME). The ministry has released Rs 560 crore i.e. 70 per cent of the total amount to three companies-Indian Oil (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) under the first installment.
With this amount, these companies will set up charging stations at their respective petrol pumps to charge electric vehicles. According to an official statement, the installation of charging stations is expected to be completed by March, 2024. At present, there are 6,586 charging stations across the country. “The new 7,432 public charging stations will provide a significant boost to the electric vehicle charging ecosystem,” according to the release. It added that the charging stations can be used for charging two-wheelers, four-wheelers, light commercial vehicles and minibuses.
