The Parliament of Pakistan passed a resolution demanding reversal of the death sentence given to former Prime Minister and PPP founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. Bhutto was hanged in 1979 by the military regime of General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq. The motion was passed days after the Supreme Court unanimously opined on March 6 that the former prime minister did not receive a fair trial and due process in its much-awaited review of the high-profile case.
On 18 March 1978, the Lahore High Court sentenced Bhutto to death for ordering the assassination of Ahmed Raza Kasuri, one of the founding members of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). The resolution adopted by the National Assembly (NA) and moved by PPP’s Shazia Mary described Bhutto’s trial and subsequent conviction as a gross miscarriage of justice, Geo News reported. It salutes the struggles of Begum Nusrat Bhutto Sahiba, Martyr Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and workers of Pakistan Peoples Party who sacrificed their lives to establish this truth.
The top court’s opinion was based on a special case referred to the Supreme Court in 2011 for reconsideration of then President Asif Ali Zardari’s conviction in the murder case of his father-in-law Bhutto and his death sentence on April 4, 1979. Was. Coincidentally, on March 10, Zardari was elected President for the second time. The resolution lauded the Supreme Court for finally acknowledging and accepting in its decision the grave injustice done to Bhutto 44 years ago.
