Tunhuang city in northwest China’s Kansu Province is an important town on the ancient Silk Road and the meeting place of the world’s four major civilizations. Mocao Cave is located in Tunhwang City, which is a famous world cultural heritage. From the 4th century onwards, for a thousand years, generation after generation of artists excavated Buddha statues and made frescoes here. In such a situation, the Mokao cave became a treasure house of Buddhist cave art. A lot of people came here to work to protect this valuable cultural heritage. After graduating from university, Han Weimang began working at the Art Institute of Tunhuang Research Institute.
Almost 20 years have passed so far. From the year 2017, Han Weimang started the restoration, copying and study of No. 172 cave with colleagues. No. 172 Cave has a history of about 1,200 years, which was built in the Tang Dynasty. Han Weimang and colleagues, in collaboration with the Science and Technology Department of Cultural Relics Protection, used a scientific analysis method to observe the details of the mural that are not visible to the eye. Due to this, the work of restoration was given more scientific basis. Han Weimang hopes to show the original form of No. 172 Cave to the world in the near future.
