Austin will be in India next week for the 5th annual 2+2 ministerial dialogue. This meeting will focus on enhancing defense partnership between the two countries and building consensus on policies at the global level.

Apart from meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, he will also hold meetings with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. A statement from the US State Department said the delegation would discuss “bilateral and global concerns” and developments in the Indo-Pacific region. Sources in the defense and diplomatic establishment said that several major issues would come up for discussion. On the defense front, the area of ​​focus will be the ongoing talks for the transfer of jet engine technology that will power the Tejas Mk 2 fighter aircraft, besides discussions on a deal for MQ9B drones to arm the Indian Army.

What was the focus in the meeting?

This is the fifth meeting between the two countries. Even though all four leaders have a lot in their plans. The war continues in Ukraine and the trouble between Israel and Hamas has just begun. There are also domestic issues like assembly elections in five states. Naturally Israel-Palestine and Russia-Ukraine as well as the Indo-Pacific will also be discussed. After the meeting, Defense Secretary Austin will visit an important military base.

India and 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue

2+2 meetings between the United States and India began in 2018 and there have been four so far. two in the United States and two in India. That the meeting is taking place despite the problems in West Asia and Ukraine is another sign of close relations between the two countries. India holds 2+2 meetings with very few countries. Apart from the United States, India has this arrangement with Japan and Australia, both members of the Quad, and its old friend, Russia. India and America are members of Quad.
