United Nations : The chief of UN peacekeeping affairs on Monday welcomed the deployment of India’s largest contingent of women peacekeepers in Abai, saying women soldiers mean efficient operations. Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping, tweeted, “Delighted to see the largest ever contingent of women peacekeepers from India in Abaye.
More female peacekeepers means more efficient operations. They will help us reflect better on those we serve. The largest contingent of women peacekeepers arrived in Abei from India on Saturday. They will be deployed with the United Nations Interim Security Force (UNISFA). Abei is a disputed area on the border between South Sudan and Sudan and has been given “special administrative status”.
The mission tweeted on Monday, “UNISFA is excited to welcome the deployment of the largest single contingent of women peacekeepers in recent years from India. She will join the Indian battalion serving UNISFA in Abeyi. This deployment reaffirms India’s continued commitment to UNISFA. The contingent of women peacekeepers comprises two officers and 25 officers of other ranks. The team will work with their counterparts for a year to establish lasting peace in Abei.
