Health supplies sent to 400,000 earthquake victims in Syria, Turkey: WHO

Geneva : The World Health Organization said it has sent health supplies to nearly four million people affected by the powerful earthquake in Turkey and Syria. Turkey and Syria have been hit hard by the devastating earthquake, WHO said in a statement, following which the World Health Organization has supplied 72 tons of trauma and emergency surgery supplies, including treatments, to the two countries to provide assistance.
Through the first two flights of WHO, 72 tonnes of life-saving supplies have been supplied for one lakh people in Turkey and Syria. It said a third flight was due to arrive in Syria on Sunday with 37 tons of emergency health supplies for three million more people. Turkey’s state news agency Anadolu reported, “Survivors are experiencing severe cold and continuous aftershocks and have very limited access to shelter, food, water and medical care.”
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Gebreyes said that we are racing against time to save the lives of the victims. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) also pledged to continue supporting relief operations as survivors continue to face desperation and obstacles. IFRC Secretary General Jagan Chapgen said on Twitter that the survivors of the disaster were not alone.
Significantly, more than 20 thousand people died while more than 80 thousand people were injured in two powerful earthquakes in southern Turkey on Monday. The epicenter of the earthquakes has been Kahramanmaraş province and its magnitude has been 7.7 and 7.6 and it has affected about 13 million people in 10 Turkish provinces including Adana, Adıyaman, Diyarbakır, Hatay, Kilis, Malta.
In neighboring Syria, the death toll from the earthquake has crossed 3,300 and more than 5,200 people have been injured.
