Sydney: Heavy rains and subsequent floods in the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) have caused extensive damage to housing in the state. The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) said in a statement on Sunday morning it was assessing damage in the beaches of Illawarra and North Sydney, a coastal region in NSW’s south-east, and found 20 properties had been damaged.
According to reports, roofs of some residences have been damaged after heavy rains. The SES will also assess damage to the west of Penrith, a town in NSW, and then to other areas along the Hawkesbury Nepean River. River flooding along the Hawkesbury Nepean River system also occurred in North Richmond, a town in NSW, according to the statement.
The SES had recorded 1,877 incidents as of 5am local time on Sunday and rescued 146 people from floods in the last 24 hours. There are 1,400 residences and more than 3,600 people under emergency care. Additionally, WaterNSW, a NSW government-owned corporation, said on Saturday that many of the Greater Sydney water supply dams were breaking following heavy rain in Sydney’s water supply catchment.
