Heavy rains in Brazil, 36 people died

Sao Paulo: At least 36 people have died due to floods and landslides in Brazil’s northern Sao Paulo state. Officials said on Sunday that the number of casualties could still rise. The Sao Paulo state government said in a statement that 35 people had died in the city of Sao Sebastiao, while a seven-year-old girl was reported dead in Ubatuba. According to reports, the cities of São Sebastião, Ubatuba, Ilhabela and Arbitoga are among some of the worst affected areas. There is a situation of disaster in view of which the carnival festival has been cancelled.
At the same time, the rescue teams are searching for the missing, injured and people buried in the debris. Sao Sebastiao Mayor Felipe Augusto said, “Our rescue teams are unable to reach many places, it is a state of chaos.” He said that dozens of people have been killed and more than 50 houses have collapsed due to the landslide. Augusto posted several videos on social media showing the widespread devastation in the city, including a video of a child being rescued by locals on a flooded street.
Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva said on Twitter that he would visit the affected area. The Sao Paulo state government said in a statement that the region received more than 600 millimeters (23.6 inches) of rain in one day, the most in Brazil in such a short period of time. The state government said Arbitoga alone received 687 mm of rain during this period.
