Similarly, many people who take pride in not wearing seat belts will also be found, whereas the truth is that helmets and seat belts play a very important role in saving a person’s life. The traffic police also remain on the target of the people because they issue a lot of challans. In Punjab, the traffic police is even accused of issuing so many challans to get its salary. The truth is that traffic police challans remind you along with your mistake that your life is very precious, don’t play with it. It is worth mentioning that forty percent deaths due to road accidents across the country can be prevented by just wearing helmets and seat belts. This conclusion has come out in a report by FICCI and Ernst & Young, indicating the need to sensitize traffic rules and awareness of risk. According to this, 30 percent of the deaths are due to not wearing helmets and 11 percent are not wearing seat belts. If these safety measures are tried compulsorily, then there can be a significant reduction in road accidents. The report states that 1.5 million people die every year in the country due to road accidents, which is 11 percent of the world’s deaths due to this reason. This number is almost ten times more than the 2021 report released by the Ministry of Road Transport. The ministry has said that about 1.5 lakh people die every year due to road accidents. FICCI reports that every 24 seconds one person dies in an accident. WHO has named road accidents as the eighth biggest cause of death. According to WHO, 1.3 billion people have lost their lives due to accidents. It is the leading cause of death of children and youth aged five to 29 years. FICCI’s report titled Road Safety in India states that every year our country loses people equal to the total population of Estonia only due to road accidents. India is a signatory to the Brasilia Declaration, which aims to halve the number of road accidents and deaths in the world by 2030.
