Taiwan High Speed Rail Network said the quake hit the entire network (Nangang-Juying Line) at about 8:30 a.m. Taiwan High Speed Rail Network has apologized to passengers for the inconvenience. According to Taiwan News, the network has set up an emergency response center to inspect lines, stations and other facilities.
The epicenter was located about 18 kilometers (11 miles) south of Hualien city in Taiwan, The New York Times quoted the U.S. Geological Survey as saying. Many buildings in Hualien have partially collapsed and appear to be leaning at dangerous angles. The newspaper has tried to show the entire scene by releasing a video.
Seismological officials said it was Taiwan’s most powerful earthquake in 25 years. Tsunami warnings were issued in Taiwan and neighboring countries. The effect of this earthquake has also been seen on Japan. Japan has also issued a tsunami warning. According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake was centered in the waters of Hualien County on Taiwan’s east coast. Taiwan’s Central Meteorological Administration also recorded a strong shock.
