The war between Israel and Palestine’s Hamas terrorist group entered the 22nd day on Saturday. More than 8,500 people from both sides have been killed. The Hamas-led health ministry said at least 7,300 Palestinians had been killed in retaliatory air strikes by Israeli Defense Forces in Gaza since October 7.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday night issued an appeal for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. Israel has intensified its attack in the surrounded area. Guterres also called for the unconditional release of hostages who were brought to Gaza by Israel after Hamas attacked Israeli settlements on October 7. The UN chief also stressed the need for large-scale distribution of life-saving supplies to Gaza.
Everyone should understand their responsibilities. This is the moment of truth. History will judge us all. Guterres’s comments come at a time when Israeli Defense Forces have intensified bombardment in the Gaza Strip. Tel Aviv also cut off internet and communications in the besieged area, cutting off some 2.3 million people from contact with each other as well as the outside world. Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, Israel’s chief military spokesman, acknowledged that Tel Aviv has stepped up attacks in Gaza to achieve war objectives, raising hopes that a long-awaited ground offensive could begin.
