The impact of an ongoing strike by Writers Guild of America (WGA) members demanding better pay, including smaller specialty contracts, was felt as major television networks began their annual week of sales presentations for advertisers on Monday. The writers’ strike led to the temporary shutdown of shows including Apple TV Plus’ Billions, Severance and the new Marvel show Daredevil: Born Again on Disney Plus.
Some 11,500 members of the Writers Guild of America have said their earnings have been hit by the rise of streaming, leaving them out of work for two weeks after talks over a new deal broke down and talks have not moved forward. Around 11,500 Hollywood film and television writers, represented by the WGA, are on an indefinite strike beginning the first week of May over various demands. However, this is not the first time that the entertainment industry in Hollywood has faced such a situation. Earlier, the last WGA strike in the year 2007-2008 lasted for 100 days. Whereas, the strike in 1988 lasted for 153 days.
