Houthi rebels counterattack after US attacks, missile fired at US ship in Red Sea

Yemen’s Houthi rebels on Sunday fired a ship-destroying cruise missile at an American ship in the Red Sea, which was shot down by an American fighter plane. During the Israel-Hamas war, Houthi rebels have targeted oil and cargo ships from Asia and the Middle East along the Suez Canal, the vital corridor linking Europe. Such attacks pose a danger of the Israel-Hamas war turning into a regional conflict. Houthi, the Shia rebel group affiliated with Iran, has not yet claimed responsibility for the attack. The US Army’s Central Command said in a statement that the destroyer ship ‘USS Laboon’ operating in the southern areas of the Red Sea was targeted in the attack by Houthi rebels. The US said the missile came from near the Red Sea port city of Hodeida, which has long been controlled by Houthi rebels. Central Command said a destroyer cruise missile was fired towards the USS Laboon from Iran-backed Houthi rebel areas in Yemen. There is no information about any casualty or damage in the incident.
On Friday, the first day of the US-led strikes, 28 locations were struck and more than 60 targets were hit by cruise missiles and bombs launched by fighter aircraft, warships and a submarine. The US Army then attacked the Houthi radar site on Saturday. The Houthis alleged, without providing evidence, that the US attacked a site near Hodeida on Sunday, coinciding with the Houthi rebels firing cruise missiles.
The US and Britain on Sunday did not admit that they carried out the attack and said that the explosion may have been caused by the failure of a missile fired by the rebels. Since November, rebels have repeatedly targeted ships in the Red Sea. They say they are taking revenge for Israel’s attack against Hamas in Gaza. But they have often targeted ships with no obvious ties to Israel, endangering shipping on a key route for global trade.
