The US has not verified the contents of the media reports published in +972 magazine and Local Call on Wednesday. It cited Israeli intelligence officers involved in the alleged program called “Lavender”. Media reports said the Israeli military had marked thousands of Gazans as murder suspects, using an AI system with little human oversight.
White House national security spokesman John Kirby told CNN on Thursday that the US is looking into a media report that Israeli forces are using artificial intelligence to help identify bombing targets in Gaza. In a CNN interview, Kirby said the United States has not verified the content of media reports published Wednesday in +972 magazine and Local Call. It cited Israeli intelligence officers involved in the alleged program called “Lavender”. Media reports said the Israeli military had marked thousands of Gazans as murder suspects, using an AI system with little human oversight.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) denies that AI was used to identify suspected extremists and targets. The IDF said in a statement that the IDF does not use an artificial intelligence system that identifies terrorist operatives or tries to predict whether an individual is a terrorist. Information systems are only tools for analysts in the target identification process.
The statement said the IDF instructs analysts to conduct independent examinations, in which they verify that the identified targets meet the relevant definitions in line with international law and Israeli guidelines. Kirby was also asked in the CNN interview about reports that the Israeli Security Cabinet had approved the opening of the Erez crossing with Gaza to allow more humanitarian aid to enter. Kirby said the opening of the crossing would be welcome news and certainly something Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told US President Joe Biden in his call Thursday.
