United Nations: India has described the UN Security Council resolution demanding a ceasefire in Gaza during the month of Ramadan as a “positive step” and said the humanitarian crisis arising out of the Israel-Hamas conflict is “absolutely unacceptable”. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, said at the UN General Assembly meeting here on Monday, “We are extremely concerned about the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The humanitarian crisis has deepened and instability is increasing in the region and beyond.” He said India views the passing of a resolution by the UN Security Council on March 25 as a ”positive step”.

Kamboj said a large number of civilians, especially women and children, have been killed due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. He said, “The humanitarian crisis caused by this conflict is absolutely unacceptable.” Kamboj said that India strongly condemns the deaths of civilians in the conflict and in any conflict situation it is imperative that civilians are killed. There should be no incidents of death. The UN Security Council last month passed a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during Ramadan. This resolution was passed after more than five months of conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The fifteen-nation Security Council adopted the resolution submitted by the 10 non-permanent elected members. 14 countries voted in favor of the resolution, while the US abstained. However, just a few days before this, on March 22, Russia and China had used veto on a US proposal regarding immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Under this resolution, there was a call for an immediate stop to the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza to protect civilians in Gaza and to provide humanitarian aid to more than 2 million Palestinians facing starvation.

Kamboj underlined that India’s stance on the conflict has been clearly expressed by the country’s leadership on several occasions. He said that terrorist attacks or hostage taking cannot be justified in any way. He stressed that the terrorist attacks on Israel on October 7 last year were shocking and deserved “our unequivocal condemnation”. Kamboj said, ‘India has long had a clear stance against terrorism in all its forms and there has been no change in this stance. “We demand the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.”

Kamboj welcomed the efforts of the United Nations and the international community in working towards peace in the region and said India has provided humanitarian assistance to the people of Palestine and “will continue to do so.” Said, ‘We are committed to supporting a two-state solution in which the Palestinian people can live freely in an independent state within secure borders, taking into account Israel’s security needs.’
