Now in a surprise move, China has announced the temporary closure of the consular section of its embassy in Islamabad until further notice. “Due to technical issues, the Consular Section of the Chinese Embassy in Islamabad will remain temporarily closed from February 13, 2023 until further notice,” said a notice released on the official website. According to a source in the Diplomatic Enclave of Islamabad, the Chinese Embassy Pakistan was receiving constant threats from Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) and Baloch terrorists.This announcement by China will make it difficult for Pakistanis to get visas.
The source said the embassy, in consultation with Beijing, decided to suspend its consular services to avoid any mishaps and incidents. The source also revealed that China is not happy with the Shehbaz Sharif-led coalition government as attacks on Chinese citizens and China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects are on the rise. Beijing reportedly said, “If Islamabad cannot protect our citizens, projects and interests, we know the way.
Beijing informed Islamabad that it could not work and trade in a “serious security situation” as Chinese workers were being threatened and killed in Pakistan. The source further said that despite assurances by Pakistan Prime Minister Sharif on his visit to Beijing last year, China does not feel safe in Pakistan. Growing security threats have prompted Beijing to take tough measures, with the embassy in Pakistan informing its citizens, workers and businessmen to stay safe and avoid risky areas. Most of the Chinese families are also leaving Pakistan after the threats.
In December 2022, Australia, Saudi Arabia, the US and the UK warned embassy staff to restrict roaming amid the Islamabad terror red alert. Pakistan has seen a 56% increase in terror attacks since the fall of Kabul, and the recent attack on the Peshawar Mosque has horrified the entire country.
