Johannesburg, 21 August (HS). Politics has intensified regarding the expansion of BRICS, a membership organization of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Ignoring India’s opposition, South Africa has supported China’s demand for expansion of BRICS.
The BRICS summit is to be held in Johannesburg from 22 to 24 August. 22 countries have applied to become a member of BRICS. Leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa will consider it at the conference. India is opposing the expansion of BRICS, but China is in favor of expansion. Meanwhile, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has supported China regarding the expansion of BRICS. Addressing the nation, he said that his country supports increasing the number of members of the ‘BRICS’ grouping.
Ramaphosa said that to make its efforts more effective, BRICS needs to partner with other countries that share its aspirations and vision. Ramaphosa welcomed the participation of several other leaders from countries in Africa, the Caribbean region, South America, the Middle East, West Asia, South Asia and South-East Asia in the summit. He said that an expanded BRICS would represent a diverse group of countries with different political systems, who share a common desire for a more balanced global order.
