Pakistan’s election body on Saturday rejected the nomination of former prime minister Imran Khan to contest the 2024 national elections, the election commission body said. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief filed his nomination papers to contest the elections from his hometown Mianwali. Khan was jailed in August this year in the cipher case, which involved alleged violation of the Official Secrets Act.
It was alleged that the cricketer-turned-politician had disclosed a secret diplomatic cable sent by Pakistan’s Washington embassy in March. The 71-year-old former cricket star has been embroiled in political and legal battles since he was removed from the post of Prime Minister in April 2022. Supreme Court judges said in a written court order that they did not find sufficient incriminating material to establish that Khan leaked state secrets to benefit a foreign power.
The order said Khan’s release on bail during the election period would ensure ‘genuine elections’ and thus enable the people to effectively and meaningfully exercise their right to express their will. There are no exceptional circumstances to refuse the concession of bail.
