Since his ouster in a no-confidence vote in parliament last April, the 70-year-old former cricketer-turned-politician has been dogged by cases, including allegations of terrorism and corruption while in office.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan on Tuesday got relief from the Lahore High Court in a terrorism-related case. Pakistan court has granted bail to Imran Khan in terrorism cases. A Pakistani court on Tuesday granted one week bail to former prime minister Imran Khan in two fresh cases in which he is facing terrorism charges, officials said. The ruling ousted prime minister and now popular opposition leader had another brief respite from arrest.
Since his ouster in a no-confidence vote in parliament last April, the 70-year-old former cricketer-turned-politician has been dogged by cases, including allegations of terrorism and corruption while in office. Khan’s standoff with the government of his successor, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, has turned increasingly violent in recent days. Khan is accused of inciting people to violence in terrorism cases when he went to Islamabad last Saturday to face indictment in a corruption case. His followers clashed with the police outside the court and Khan never appeared before a judge. The corruption case was later adjourned till the end of March.
A separate terrorism case against Khan pertains to a rally last year when he verbally threatened a woman judge. Khan denied all the allegations against him, saying that he was being persecuted by the Sharif government. A close aide of Khan reiterated those claims after Tuesday’s ruling by a court in Lahore, the capital of East Punjab province. Fawad Chaudhry, a senior leader of Khan’s opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, said the terrorism allegations were “politically motivated”.
