In a tweet on Monday, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief said, “Today, we stand at a turning point in our constitutional history, where we can be like Turkey or become another Myanmar.” Everyone must decide whether they stand by the constitution, the rule of law and democracy, like their party; Or with a corrupt mafia, jungle raj and fascism.” The Pakistani military has ruled for more than half of the country’s nearly 75-year history and exercised its authority in matters of security and foreign policy. Khan has been at loggerheads with the military establishment since he was ousted from power by a no-confidence motion against him in April last year.
Conspiracy not to hold elections
Khan said the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and its allies do not want elections to be held in the country either now or in October. Cricketer-turned-politician Khan said absconding Nawaz Sharif is in London and openly threatening the Chief Justice of Pakistan and other judges of the apex court. “We stand by the Supreme Court and the Constitution in the light of this imported government’s fascist tactics to pressurize the Supreme Court judges,” he said.
Decision will come on Tuesday
A three-judge bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial is hearing the election-related matter and is likely to pronounce its verdict on Tuesday. Home Minister Rana Sanaullah said the government was considering bringing a case against Chief Justice Bandial and two other members of the bench – Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan and Justice Munib Akhtar. The PML-N and its allies have alleged that Chief Justice Bandial and some other judges are believed to be supporting Imran Khan’s party.
