Imran Khan was interrogated in jail regarding the missing secret document

Pakistan’s top probe agency has questioned jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan in a case registered under the Official Secrets Act over misappropriation of classified documents. This thing was said in the media reports on Sunday. Khan admitted to missing the classified diplomatic document. Khan, 70, is currently serving a three-year jail term after being convicted by a court in a corruption case earlier this month. The said document was the same document that Khan cited at length last year as evidence of a US-backed plot to oust him as prime minister. Khan had waved a document at a rally a few days before stepping down as prime minister in April 2022, saying it was evidence of a foreign conspiracy.

The questioning of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Khan in this case comes days after a case was registered under the Official Secrets Act for making public the contents of a classified diplomatic message from the country’s embassy in the US. Media reports said that the Counter Terrorism Wing (CTW) of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) met the jailed former prime minister on Saturday. FIA sources said a six-member joint investigation team led by FIA Deputy Director Ayaz Khan questioned Khan for over an hour at the office of the Deputy Superintendent of Attock Jail, Dawn newspaper reported. During interrogation, Khan admitted to missing the document, saying he could not remember where he had put it, The News newspaper reported.

Khan also denied that the paper he waved as evidence of a conspiracy at a public meeting days before his government was voted out of power last year was a diplomatic document. The newspaper quoted Khan as saying, “The papers that I showed to the public were the minutes of the cabinet meeting, they were not diplomatic documents.” A case was registered against Khan and PTI vice-chairman and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi after their involvement was discovered. The FIR also states that the role of former Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary Azam Khan, former Planning Minister Asad Umar and other associates involved will be determined during the investigation.

Qureshi, a close aide of Khan, was arrested by the police from his residence here on August 19 and during Saturday’s questioning, Khan was questioned about Qureshi’s revelations. The purported document contained details of a meeting between US State Department officials and the then Pakistani ambassador Asad Majeed Khan. US officials also included Donald Lu, assistant secretary of the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs. The cricketer-turned-politician had come under attack following the publication of an alleged copy of the classified document by American media group The Intercept. At the same time, many in Pakistan’s previous government led by Shehbaz Sharif targeted Khan for his role in the leak.
