Imran Khan’s aide claims – May 9 violence was conspired to remove Army Chief

Usman Dar, a close aide of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, has said that Khan planned the May 9 violence and attacks on sensitive military installations with the aim of removing Army Chief General Asim Munir. Dar, considered one of Khan’s trusted aides, reportedly died following the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party chief Khan by paramilitary Rangers on May 9 amid unrest in Pakistan, The Express Tribune newspaper reported. Dar claimed that the conspiracy to target sensitive establishments in the May 9 violence was hatched in a meeting chaired by Khan and instructions were given to attack them in the event of the former prime minister’s arrest. Dar said that the purpose of the May 9 violence was to put pressure on the army and remove General Munir from his post. Dar said that May 9 was just a date, the conspiracy against the army was being hatched for a long time. “It was discussed (in the meetings at Khan’s residence) that government institutions should be attacked if necessary to exert pressure,” Dar said.
“When the police tried to arrest Khan, he called party workers, especially from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, to his residence in Zaman Park in Lahore,” he said. In fact, Khan prepared him mentally to fight the security agencies. Khan turned 71 on Thursday. He was arrested on August 5 this year. Khan is currently in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail. Dar also alleged that the October 2022 rally led by Khan was organized to stop the appointment of General Munir as the army chief in order to force the government to declare an early general election date. Dar also announced his decision to leave Khan’s party and politics during the interview.
He said a discourse had been created in the party that Khan’s arrest should be thwarted at all costs. Following this, party workers gathered at Khan’s residence to prevent his arrest. Meanwhile, in a sharp reaction, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf said that Dar’s interview has neither any importance in the eyes of the public nor legal validity, as reported by ‘Nation’ newspaper. A party spokesperson said in a statement that Dar’s appearance on a private TV channel after spending 24 days in the custody of unknown kidnappers undoubtedly exposed the kidnappers themselves. Dar is among about 200 leaders and former MPs of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf who left Khan after the May 9 violence.
