Qaiser confirmed that the PTI-backed candidates who have joined the SIC will remain with the alliance and merge into it if the election symbol issue is resolved. Barrister Gohar Ali Khan was recently elected as PTI chairman in the latest intra-party elections held after the Election Commission of Pakistan rejected the previous organizational elections conducted in December last year. PTI, founded by 71-year-old former cricketer Imran Khan, has faced challenges in its intra-party elections, the latest election being the third attempt in the last two years. The ECP had earlier canceled the elections held in June 2022, terming them highly objectionable. Qaiser noted that there were extensive deliberations within the party before taking the decision to associate with SIC and that he was taking legal advice on the matter.

Regarding the recent court decision rejecting the SIC’s petition for reserved seats in the national and provincial assemblies, Qaiser said that PTI intends to challenge this decision in the Supreme Court. The bench rejected the arguments of the SIC, which aimed to secure their share in seats reserved for women and minorities on the basis of proportional allocation to the parties winning in the general elections.
