Islamabad:China’s growing influence in South Asia definitely raises doubts about its intentions. Beijing is strengthening its position by taking advantage of the economic weakness of some important countries in the region. China’s relations with India can be understood from the ongoing conflicts along the de facto border and its close monitoring of India’s economic development in which China has adopted an aggressive stance. To reduce India’s influence in the region, China is resorting to countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan, investing and helping them whose economies are in shambles.

Cash-strapped Pakistan, which is fast sinking under the burden of foreign debt and deteriorating financial condition, has been repeatedly given relief packages by China. It has invested there, given loans to it so that Pakistan is not short of foreign exchange. With this, it has strengthened its role in deciding the direction of Pakistan’s politics and financial development in the coming times. China is taking interest in Pakistan for another reason – China-Pakistan-Economic Corridor (CPEC) and its important sites like Khunjerab Pass and Gwadar Port.

investing in afghanistan

It is believed that the CPEC route is at the heart of China’s ‘One Belt One Route’ (OBOR) initiative as it will strengthen China’s economic position besides strengthening its position along the LAC with India. Seizing the opportunity to strengthen its ties with the Taliban regime at a time when global powers have not recognized it, China is also investing heavily in Afghanistan which will further strengthen its position as a decisive factor in the region. China is well aware of how Pakistan is currently seeking to rebalance its geopolitical situation. Apart from financial help, Pakistan is also turning to China for security reasons, due to which China is succeeding in increasing Pakistan’s dependence on it.

Taking advantage of Pakistan’s weakness

CPEC has definitely come as a life saver for Pakistan at a time when foreign investors are shying away from investing in Pakistan citing security risks. CPEC offers Pakistan a possible framework to accelerate economic growth and enhance regional connectivity, which is different from the US or India-centric strategic framework. It can help Pakistan overcome its backwardness in terms of infrastructure, its industry will have the means to manufacture its products and sell them to the world.

Therefore, it would not be wrong to say that China is undoubtedly taking advantage of Pakistan’s economic weakness to have more leverage in the region and to keep western countries away from it. In this way, it is China’s effort to establish its control over the LAC with India more strongly and by taking other countries of the region under its control, they can be distanced from other countries. Apart from this, its strategy is that its thinking of controlling the region should also get the support of its allies, who despite disagreeing with China, are forced to support it due to economic dependence on it.
