India is developing strong semiconductor industry, first chip made in India will arrive in December: Vaishnav

Communications and Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the first chip made in India will be in the market by December. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for developing a very strong semiconductor industry in the country in a short period of time with a focus on the entire ecosystem. Speaking to PTI on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF), the minister said that Prime Minister Modi had launched a semiconductor policy in January 2022. When he met senior representatives of the industry here, they were all amazed at how this could be done in such a short time. “They all appreciated the policy and the fact that Prime Minister Modi has always emphasized on creating a comprehensive environment because many countries do not have such a policy and hence could not get such success,” he said.
Vaishnav said the Prime Minister has always focused on developing an environment where a lot of attention is given to talent. “MoUs (memorandum of understanding) already exist with 104 universities, their curriculum is being revised, more focus has been given on design with a separate investment plan,” Vaishnav said. ‘Many design companies have benefited from this and are gradually moving up the value chain. All of them are getting a lot of appreciation from companies all over the world.” Citing the example of chip manufacturing company Macro, Vaishnav said that everyone has been surprised by the way Macro’s unit has grown so fast. “The agreement was signed in June 2023, while construction began in September 2023,” he said. The first Indian-made chip will arrive in December 2024.
Asked about not paying much attention to industry development earlier, Vaishnav said Modi’s views focus on a long-term view, be it defense manufacturing, infrastructure investment… “He always thinks with at least a 10-year, 20-year, 30-year and 50-year perspective,” he said. He is of the view that whatever is being done today, the country should benefit from it for many years.
