US Congressman Ro Khanna has said that given Russia’s close ties with China in the wake of the war in Ukraine, it is unlikely that India will look to Russia as a “safe” friend. . During a luncheon discussion with a group of journalists on Tuesday, Khanna said the Indian-Americans in Congress should aim to deepen ties.
He said, “I do not think that given the close relations between Russia and China, India will look at Russia as a safe friend to defend against a possible attack on its border in Asia. They (Indians) know that the US is a more reliable partner for that goal.” Khanna said it is in India’s interest to engage more strongly with the US in terms of best defense against China. According to him, this has been an important factor in India’s foreign policy. “(India’s) Foreign Minister S Jaishankar has made it clear that it does not mean that he will follow our interests in the US but wants to engage with us at the moment because he considers it strategically important,” Khanna said.
Unlike the Quad’s partner countries, India has not condemned Russia’s attack on Ukraine and has not participated in the voting on resolutions brought in UN forums against Russia’s attack. Khanna is hosting the first-of-its-kind US-India conference as co-chair of the Congressional India Caucus.
