Pakistan Foreign Ministry confirmed
Pakistan’s newspaper The News has said that relations between India and Pakistan have worsened. The nuclear-armed neighbors have ended the tradition of exchanging formal greetings on their respective Independence Days for the first time during peacetime. This incident is enough to tell to what extent the relationship between the two has deteriorated.
Pakistan celebrated its 77th Independence Day on 14th August while India celebrated it a day after that. August 14 was also Shahbaz Sharif’s last day in office as the Prime Minister of Pakistan. Pakistan’s Foreign Office has confirmed that no greetings were exchanged by Pakistan and India on the occasion of their Independence Day.
PM Modi did not congratulate
The outgoing government kept waiting for a congratulatory message from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On the same day, Anwar-ul-Haq Kakkar was sworn in as the eighth caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan. He also preferred not to send a salute on India’s Independence Day. If media of Pakistan is to be believed then the PM of India did not even greet the head of the government who took office this time. No message was sent from New Delhi till the third day of the interim PM Kakkar’s government. The country’s foreign ministry did not comment on these new ‘trends’ in diplomatic relations between the two countries.
‘Relations spoiled because of India’
The Pakistani media says that it is clear from this that the relationship between the two has become strained. Geo News says that the relations between the two countries have deteriorated mainly due to the aggressive attitude of the leadership of India. But ever since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government came to power and Modi took over as the PM, relations have deteriorated further. In November 2016, India announced not to participate in the SAARC summit to be held in Pakistan.
