India-Pakistan signed a treaty on 21 February, then after 2 months…the story of Lahore Agreement of 1999

In the year 1999, the then Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee and 22 people along with him reached Lahore from Wagah Border in a bus. These 22 people included Vajpayee’s cabinet, some foreign ministers and veteran artists. Atal Bihari Vajpayee received a warm welcome as soon as he reached Lahore. Vajpayee said that I have brought the goodwill and hope of my fellow Indians who want lasting peace and harmony with Pakistan. I know this is a defining moment in the history of South Asia and I am hopeful that we will be able to meet the challenges. On 21 February 1999, a treaty is signed between Pakistan and India, which was called Lahore Agreement.

Atal Bihari hugged Nawaz Sharif

A defining moment of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s tenure was his Lahore bus tour in February 1999. This was a decision that had the potential to bring about a radical change in the relations between India and Pakistan. Atal Bihari Vajpayee went to Lahore by bus in 1999 and left a mark of his endearing image by hugging his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif.

What was the Lahore Declaration?

The Lahore MoU is apparently a joint undertaking for India and Pakistan to inform each other about ballistic missile flight tests. According to the declaration, both countries agreed that sustainable peace and development of cordial relations and friendly cooperation would be helpful in the interests of the peoples of both the countries. So that they will be able to devote their energy to a better future. It was said to accelerate our efforts to resolve all the issues including the issue of Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan showed its true face within 2 months

Less than two months had passed since this agreement of peace and harmony, in May 1999, Pakistan started war in Kargil. The date of 3 May 1999 when the high hills of Kargil were captured by Pakistani soldiers. After which the bravehearts of the Indian Army created the history of Operation Vijay by hoisting the tricolor at a height of 18 thousand feet.
