A top UN expert on Friday asked India to immediately end its crackdown on Kashmiri human rights activists and urged New Delhi to close all investigations against them and release them. The request by Mary Lawler, United Nations Special Envoy on Human Rights activists, comes at a time when the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested the Jammu and Kashmir Citizens’ Collective Coalition (JKCCS) in a terror financing case linked to a non-governmental organization (NGO). )’s coordinator Khurram Parvez has been arrested.
According to the NIA, the involvement of some NGOs, Trusts and Societies of the Valley in financing terrorism related activities is being probed in this case. The NIA has said that some of these organizations have developed links with terrorist organizations such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Hizbul Mujahideen. Mary Lawler said, “The Indian authorities appear to be intensifying a long-standing repression of Kashmiri civil society. India must honor its human rights obligations and be held accountable where it violates them.
