Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe and visiting Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L. Murugan said here on Saturday that the partnership between the two countries is being guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘neighbourhood first’ policy. Officials said Wickremesinghe and Murugan met in Jaffna and attended a function to dedicate the India-funded ‘Cultural Centre’ to the people of Sri Lanka.
He said that the partnership between India and Sri Lanka is being guided by Prime Minister Modi’s ‘neighbourhood first policy’. This policy is an integral part of Indian foreign policy. It emphasizes on building cordial and synergistic relations with India’s South East Asian neighbors in the fields of economy, science and technology, research and education, among others.
Speaking on the occasion, Wickremesinghe said, “It is a gift given by Prime Minister Modi. I would like to thank Prime Minister Modi. This will continue to be a feature of the India-Sri Lanka partnership.” Prime Minister Modi described the center as an important initiative and appreciated the presence of President Wickremesinghe on the occasion. Modi tweeted, “The Jaffna Cultural Center is an important initiative showcasing the close cultural cooperation between India and Sri Lanka. Many people will benefit from this. The gracious presence of President Ranil Wickremesinghe made the event even more special.
In another tweet, he said, “I will not forget my special visit to Jaffna in 2015, where I had the opportunity to lay the foundation stone of the Jaffna Cultural Centre.” Along with this tweet, he also shared pictures of his Jaffna trip. The foundation stone of this center was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2015. It will have facilities like a museum, a state-of-the-art auditorium with seating for over 600 people and an 11-storey ‘learning tower’.
