India is the host of the G-20 conference and it is being termed as the biggest success of the country’s foreign policy. The latest statement by India’s Ambassador to Russia, who represents the country’s Ministry of External Affairs, is headache-inducing. Ambassador Denis Alipov and Ambassador of Ukraine, Oleksandr Polishchuk were speaking at an event recently. His speech at the event, a week before the G-20 summit, has become a major source of confusion. Russia has made it clear that it will not make it easy for the host country and friendly India to issue a joint statement. While Kiev has sought New India’s help in post-war reconstruction.
China and Russia unite
The declaration of the summit this year is in line with the previous G-20 summit which took place in Bali, Indonesia. Its two paragraphs are taken from last year’s manifesto. It was released in November last year. Both Russia and China agreed to two paragraphs on the Ukraine conflict in the Bali Declaration. But this year both the countries have withdrawn it. Because of this, India is finding it difficult to build a consensus on this difficult issue. There are fears the summit could end without a declaration due to lack of consensus on how to describe the Ukraine conflict.
Russia ready for talks
Russia’s Ambassador Alipov said in a press conference, ‘There is no consensus on the G-20 declaration, especially on a specific agenda related to the Ukraine paragraph. So if there is no consensus, if there is agreement on all the other points on the agenda and there is no agreement on just one, what do we do with it? We believe that non-consensual items should be removed and agree on topical issues such as climate change, sustainable development, the financial crisis and the food crisis, on all of which we are united. We have finalized all except the para related to Ukraine. Alipov said that Russia is always ready for talks.
Blamed India
According to Alipov, the G-20 was formed to solve financial and economic problems and not geopolitical problems. He did not hold back from saying that India is an influential country, but so far no constructive proposal has been made from its side to stop the war. On the other hand, Ukrainian Ambassador Polishchuk said that Ukraine will win this war. He said that India has already confirmed its participation in two points of President Zelensky’s peace formula – ecological security and provision of humanitarian aid and food security.
