Addressing his top team ahead of the G20 summit in India later this week, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak told his ministers on Tuesday that he would reach a trade deal with India only if it benefits the whole of Britain. His spokesman told reporters that talks around a free trade deal were progressing and he would only agree to an approach that would work for the whole of Britain.
India-UK Free Trade Agreement Negotiations
Recently, UK Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch held extensive talks with Indian government officials in New Delhi on a possible free trade agreement between India and the UK. Talking to reporters in Jaipur, Badenoch had said that the talks on the deal are in the final stages. He, however, added that visa liberalization for Indians was a separate immigration issue which does not come under the purview of the FTA. The UK is one of the biggest European markets for Indian IT services and more visas for its workers has been a key demand of New Delhi during the trade talks.
