New York (Uttam Hindu News): A 33-year-old Indian national has been convicted on multiple counts related to visa fraud and conspiracy after a three-day jury trial in the US state of Pennsylvania.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced last week that Vinay Kumar Patel was the manager of a Fuel-On convenience store in the city of Lock Haven.
In June 2019, Patel contacted an associate of his in New Jersey and asked the man to hire someone to commit a robbery at a Fuel-On store.
According to U.S. Attorney Gerard M. Karam, after the robbery was planned, it was investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police.
Patel then used the robbery’s PSP (Pre-Employment Screening Program) report to apply for a U-Visa.
A U-visa is a special visa granted by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services to non-citizens who are victims of crime and who cooperate with law enforcement.
Patel had no valid immigration status in the US at the time of the robbery. He faces a maximum of 25 years in prison, a period of supervised release after prison, and a fine.
Patel’s case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Pennsylvania State Police, and the Clinton County District Attorney’s Office.
