Singapore. Three Indian-origin technicians at Singapore’s police department were fined for attempting to steal electrical wire at their assigned workplace, while another man died of electrocution while on the job. In this case of 2020, Murugan Kothalam (27) died of electrocution while doing electrical work. The technicians — Ezhilarasan Nagarajan (26) and Radhakrishnan Ilavarasan (28) — were fined 1000 (Singaporean) dollars while Balasubramaniam Niwas (29) was fined 1500 dollars. All three have confessed to the crime of attempting to steal.
Deputy public prosecutor V Jesudevan told the court that Ilavarasan and Nivas, on behalf of Alltech Systems Company, had reached the Police National Service Department building on October 15, 2020, at around 10.30 am. He said that these two were instructed by their supervisor to give a tool used to remove hose reel box (wire bundle box) to any two other persons. He said that Nivas and Ilavarasan had conspired to sell the bare wires by cutting them.
Nagarajan and Ilavarasan bundled up the wire and then went to the main building to remove the hose reel. Later the residence heard a rumbling sound and saw that the ladder on which Kothalam was standing was shaking. Niwas felt that Kothalam was electrocuted and hit the ladder with his foot and Kothalam fell down. According to media reports, the lawyers of these accused had requested the court to impose less fine on their clients.
