A group of Indian-American lawmakers led by Indian-American Congressman Mr. Thanedar has taken the initiative to celebrate India’s Independence Day as a national day in the US as well. These MPs have proposed in the House of Representatives, the lower house of the US Parliament, under which it has been urged to declare India’s Independence Day as the celebration of the national day of the world’s two largest democracies. The resolution states that the strong partnership between the United States and India, which is rooted in the shared democratic values of both countries, will continue to work together to advance global democracy and peace, stability, and prosperity.
This proposal has been introduced in the House of Representatives on behalf of MP Mr. Thanedar. It is also co-sponsored by Congressmen Buddy Carter and Brad Sherman. The resolution noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on an official visit to the United States on June 22 and that the two countries had shared trust and mutual understanding based on common interests and shared commitments to freedom, democracy, pluralism, rule of law, and respect for human rights.
